Hidden banking fees in Switzerland: the FX markup problem

The short answer: the biggest hidden bank cost for most Swiss residents isn't the account fee – it's the 1.5–2.5% foreign-exchange markup on card payments abroad and online in foreign currency. On CHF 5,000 of yearly foreign spend, that's CHF 75–125 silently gone.

Where money leaks

FX markups on debit/credit cards, dynamic currency conversion at foreign terminals (always pay in local currency!), ATM fees abroad, paper statement fees and dormancy charges. None appear as a line item called 'fee' – they hide in exchange rates.

The fix

Hold one card with ~0% FX markup for foreign/online spending; keep your main banking wherever it serves you. Check the exchange rate your bank applied against the mid-market rate once – the gap is your real fee.

Audit yearly

One yearly fee audit (account, cards, FX) per household – ten minutes, typically CHF 100–300 found.
