Moving costs in Switzerland: the full checklist

The short answer: a move within Switzerland typically costs CHF 2,000–8,000 all-in: movers or van rental, the new rental deposit (up to 3 months' rent, locked), overlapping rents, cleaning with handover guarantee, and the small storm of address changes and new fees.

The big three

Deposit (largest single item – CHF 4,000–7,000 for typical apartments, refundable but locked), professional movers (CHF 1,000–3,000 for a household, more cross-country) or DIY van + helpers, and final cleaning with guarantee (CHF 400–900) which is practically mandatory for a smooth handover.

The forgotten items

Double rent for overlap weeks, new curtains/lamps (Swiss apartments come bare), address-change fees, and canton changes that alter your tax and vehicle tax situation mid-year.

The full cost of a Swiss move

A removal company for a three- to four-room household typically runs into the low four figures; organising it yourself with a rented van costs a fraction of that but requires people and time. The larger, less visible items are elsewhere.

Handover cleaning with acceptance guarantee (Reinigung mit Abnahmegarantie) is the item most often underestimated: for a typical flat it reaches CHF 600–1'500, and the guarantee matters because a failed handover means a second cleaning at your cost plus a delayed deposit release.

Then the overlap: two rents for a transition month, the new deposit before the old one is returned, and reconnection or activation fees for internet, electricity and insurance address changes. Liquidity, not budget, is what a move actually demands.

The deposit sequence, and how to avoid double payment

The old deposit is released only after the handover protocol is signed and any deductions are agreed – weeks after the new deposit is due. Planning for both to exist simultaneously is not pessimism, it is the normal case.

Deposit insurance products exist as an alternative to the blocked account, replacing the lump sum with an annual premium. They solve the liquidity problem but cost money permanently and do not reduce your liability – useful in a squeeze, expensive as a default.

At handover, document the flat's condition with photographs and insist that the protocol lists defects precisely. Disputes about deposit deductions are decided on that document, and the tenant who did not photograph is at a structural disadvantage.

Notice periods and early termination

Swiss leases typically require three months' notice to defined termination dates. Leaving earlier is possible if you propose a solvent, willing replacement tenant who is acceptable to the landlord – the standard route, and one that requires starting early enough to actually find someone.

Without a replacement, you remain liable for rent until the next regular termination date. This is the single most expensive mistake in Swiss moves and it is entirely avoidable with planning.

Notify the commune of departure and arrival within the required period, and update your address with insurers – health insurance premiums are canton-dependent, so a move can change your premium mid-year in either direction.

Häufige Fragen

When is the cheapest time to move?+

Outside the end of month and end of quarter. Removal firms price by demand, and the standard Swiss termination dates concentrate moves into a few days – shifting by a week frequently reduces the quote noticeably.

Do I have to do the handover cleaning professionally?+

No, but the acceptance guarantee is what you are buying. Cleaning yourself is legitimate and cheaper; if the handover fails, you pay for a second cleaning and the deposit release is delayed, which is the risk you are accepting.

What has to be reported when I move?+

Deregistration and registration with the communes within the required period, plus address changes to health insurance, other insurers, employer, bank and the tax office. Health insurance matters most: premiums are canton-dependent.

What does moving cost in Switzerland?+

A removal company for a three- to four-room household typically reaches a low four-figure amount, self-organised with a rented van a fraction of that. Add handover cleaning with acceptance guarantee at CHF 600–1'500, an overlap month of double rent, and reconnection fees.

Why do I need liquidity rather than budget for a move?+

Because the new deposit falls due weeks before the old one is released – the handover protocol has to be signed and deductions agreed first. Both deposits existing simultaneously is the normal case, not the exception.

Can I leave a Swiss lease early?+

Yes, if you propose a solvent, willing replacement tenant acceptable to the landlord. Without one you remain liable for rent until the next regular termination date – the most expensive and most avoidable mistake in Swiss moves.

How do I protect my deposit?+

Photograph the flat's condition at handover and insist the protocol lists defects precisely. Disputes about deductions are decided on that document, and a tenant without photographs is at a structural disadvantage.

Does moving change my health insurance premium?+

It can – premiums are canton and region dependent, so a move can change them mid-year in either direction. Update your address with the insurer promptly and check whether a different model or provider is now cheaper.
